Junior Science Communication Support Officers
We are looking to engage enthusiastic and motivated individuals for an internship in support of a range of communication and outreach activities for some of our key projects and initiatives (see https://www.seascapebelgium.be/our-work). The traineeship will involve on the job learning by taking on tasks in support of initiatives such as EU4Ocean, the European Atlas of the Seas and projects related to the development of European Digital Twin of the Ocean. The EU4Ocean Coalition connects diverse organisations, projects and people across Europe that contribute to ocean literacy and the sustainable ocean management. It includes three communities: the EU4Ocean Platform for organisations and individuals, the Youth4Ocean Forum and the Network of European Blue Schools. The European Atlas of the Seas is the ocean literacy tool of the European Commission powered by the European Marine Observation and Data Network (EMODnet).
After completion of a training cycle of 4-6 months, pending positive evaluation of performance and available resources, the trainee will be considered for recruitment as part of the Seascape Belgium team in Brussels.
Main tasks and responsibilities The main tasks will be performed under guidance and supervision of experienced senior staff:
- Contribute to the EU4Ocean communication activities, including developing the EU4Ocean newsletter, managing EU4Ocean social media, etc.;
- Support the expansion of the EU4Ocean Platform (stakeholder mapping, engagement and recruitment/community building); • Reach out to potential new members for the EU4Ocean Platform and keep updated the list of members in Seascape’s stakeholder relation management tool;
- Attending EU4Ocean meetings online and in Brussels;
- Contribute to the development of the weekly ‘Map of the Week’ for the European Atlas of the Seas; • Manage the social media of the Atlas;
- Contribute new ideas for exercises and games for the Atlas’ Teachers Corner, and support to their development;
- Contribute to other assignments for a range of European ocean science and environmental management projects & initiatives (cf. Seascape portfolio at https://seascapebelgium.be/our-work).
Added value for the student/trainee The trainee(s) will benefit from working alongside staff with expertise in the marine/maritime domain, working in a professional Secretariat and engaging with stakeholders across Europe and beyond, contributing to promoting EMODnet and progressing European marine data and knowledge for the EU Green Deal, Blue Economy & all.
Prerequisites
ISCED level: Bachelor (ISCED 2011 level 6)Profile and competences required:
- Applicants for the internship must have already completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree or PhD in a relevant discipline (see above);
- Excellent standard of spoken and written English (working language). Knowledge of the local language (Dutch) would be an advantage as well as any other European language;
- Strong work ethic for working transparently with open communication and ability to work both individually and as a team player;
- Ability to report progress and issues in an effective manner internally and externally at group meetings;
- Excellent organisational skills with capacity to deliver on allocated tasks and meet deadlines;
- Be able to build successful and productive relationships with stakeholders, user groups and other project team members;
- Understanding of marine science and/or the marine research and data landscape in Belgium and/or Europe would be useful but is not essential.
