Summary
The Hackathon will address simple, but challenging questions using a combination, or a comparison of environmental genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and phenomics (imaging) data from Mission Microbiomes AtlantECO.
The Hackathon will consist of a series of online, self-paced learning modules about
- the nature, potential and limitation of omics data;
- accessing omics data programmatically; and
- novel analysis approaches to combine and/or compare multi-omics data.
Participants will meet in person for 5 days in the Azores (8-12 September) to work in small teams and hack the data and rise to the challenge.
Participants are strongly encouraged to join the AtlantECO Final Scientific Conference the following week in the Azores (15-19 September 2025) in order to present the Hackathon results.
The Hackathon is a good complement to AtlantECO’s Synergy Summer School on Complexity and emergence in marine ecosystems/seascape: theory, mechanisms and data, which takes place in Italy (June 30 - July 4 2025). The Summer School is not a prerequisite to the Hackathon, but you are encouraged to participate in both events.

Prerequisites
This course/hackathon is designed for Early Career Researchers (PhD students and Postdoctoral fellows) with medium to advanced level of bioinformatics skills.
Criteria for selection:
- Priority may be given to participants who are already involved in Mission Microbiomes AtlantECO, but external participants are encouraged to apply.
- The organisers will seek a gender- balanced participation, including underrepresented/minority groups.
- Good working level of the English language is mandatory.
- Participants are strongly encouraged to register and attend the AtlantECO Final Scientific Conference in the Azores (15-19 September), the week following the Hackathon in order to present the results of the Hackathon.
Application procedure
Timeline
- Registration deadline: 12 April 2025 (see tab above Register here)
- Selection of participants: 13-30 April 2025
- Booking flights & accommodation: May 2025
- Online, self-paced learning: June-August 2025
- Online 1-hour Q&A with mentors: twice during 15 August - 5 September
- In person Hackathon: 8-12 September 2025
- In person AtlantECO final conference: 15-19 September 2025
Grant opportunities
The AtlantECO project will provide a limited number of (partial) travel grants (application for travel support is included in the registration form). Participants applying for travel support need to upload an endorsement letter from the supervisor at the host institution. Participants who can (partially) fund themselves will have priority.
Important note: participants who receive receive travel support are expected to register and attend the AtlantECO Final Scientific Conference in the Azores (15-19 September), i.e., the week following the Hackathon in order to present the results at the conference.
Participants are strongly encouraged to seek their own funding, including for attending the Conference. The organisers will be able to provide only partial support to selected participants.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 862923.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this training course, the learner will be able to:
- describe the nature of each ‘omics data type
- explain the power (potential use) of each ‘omics data type
- access each ‘omics data type
- combine and analyse the different types of ‘omics data
- critically address questions/challenges with multi-omics data
