As an Electrical Engineering major, you will gain in-depth classroom and practical knowledge about power generation, control and use.

When you graduate, you will be prepared to design, service and operate electrical systems and electrical power systems.

Professional Experience Available:

Your academic knowledge is tested and supplemented by professional learning experiences. All students choose either to complete two summer internships, or pursue a U.S. Coast Guard deck or engine license by sailing the college Training Ship Empire State VI, and joining the regiment of cadets. The regiment is a disciplined lifestyle program and is not affiliated with the military.

Academic Program

Electrical Engineering courses focus on electrical science, math and the sciences, and teach students to think abstractly.

Learning in Electrical Engineering goes well beyond the classroom. You will spend your time in labs, designing, building and testing ways to generate and deliver power, and analyzing the results. Increasingly, courses focus on sources of renewable energy and its impact on the maritime and transportation industries.

If you are interested in working onboard a commercial vessel, you may pursue a U.S. Coast Guard deck or engine license. Both license programs require membership in the college’s regiment of cadets. Earning a Coast Guard license does not require military service.

  • In the deck program, you will focus on learning navigation, cargo handling and a variety of ship systems.

  • The engine program focuses on powering and controlling a ship’s engine and energy systems.

If working onboard a vessel is not part of your plan, you may pursue a more traditional college experience through the professional internship option. In this track, you will complete two internships. Electrical Engineering students have completed internships with:

  • Turner Construction

Program Educational Objectives

The objectives for this program are for graduates to:

  1. become engineers who have the ability to practice the design, service, or operation of electrical systems or electrical power systems, and

  2. have the ability to take professional leadership positions that require an extensive engineering background.

Student Outcomes

Electrical Engineering graduates at Maritime College will possess:
