The Marine Transportation Operations (MTO) major leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree and, if qualified, eligibility to sit for a federal examination for the U.S. Coast Guard 3rd Mate Unlimited Tonnage License. This course of study prepares you for a career sailing as a navigation officer on any size vessel on any ocean.
Students learn vessel operations and navigation and subjects such as cargo operations, navigation rules, marine communications, ocean science, ship handling, ship structure, and watchkeeping. MTO majors are required to enroll in the Regimental Program and complete 365 sea days.
Sea Time & Co-op Training
Sea time is accomplished through specialized laboratories, simulation, and three at-sea experiences: two training cruises aboard the Training Ship State of Maine and one 90-day cadet shipping experience aboard a commercial merchant ship, tanker, container ship or cruise liner at the conclusion of the second year.

Professional maritime careers encompass a wide variety of professions. Depending upon your major, you may find yourself employed as an officer aboard a merchant marine ship, tug and barge, harbor pilot vessel, Coast Guard or Navy vessel, supply vessel, dynamic positioning vessel or tall ship.
