This MSc Maritime course enables you to integrate your current qualifications, experience and study all while you work. Our adaptable approach allows you to tailor its contents around the needs of your present working role and study remotely if your wish to further your career in the maritime industry, whether that be in a seafaring or a shore based role. Those who will benefit most highly are seafarers seeking a qualification that will allow them to transfer into different industries.

As this is a distant learning course, your costs will be kept to a minimum. As contact with your course tutors is arranged via the phone or email, there is also no requirement for internet access. The Marine Society is responsible for all of the administration on your behalf making your work/study experience as seamless as possible and offering you more study time to reach your goal of a future maritime qualification.

What will you study? In order to join this Masters course you will have held a Class 1 Certificate of Competency for three years or hold an equivalent qualification in a related subject and be currently working in the maritime sector.
If you have been working in a management role within the sector for five or more years but don’t hold a Class 1 Certificate of Competency, it may be possible to join by taking an additional Review of Learning module.

Professional Development
This element of the course is designed to introduce and develop the knowledge and skills required to engage in the work-based learning process. You will create a professional development plan and learning agreement that will serve as the focus of your studies, and that will be agreed between your employer and our Business School.

Practitioner Inquiry
Learn and experiment with methods of inquiry to inform your own work or professional practice. Activities will enable you to gain inquiry-related skills including critical analysis, evaluation and appraisal. These skills will help you to select, develop and apply appropriate methods of inquiry for your work-based projects.
Case scenarios may include the analysis of the context in which a certain project is being undertaken. This will include your role, position as worker/researcher and the ethical implications that arise from this.

Negotiated Work Based Learning Projects
Adopting and managing projects such as personnel and health and safety will allow you to improve or inform areas of your own, or fellow students work. 
The title of your qualification, MSc or MA in Professional Practice or Work Based Learning Studies will largely be determined by your choice of focus.

You'll need to provide copies of all academic documentation, including transcripts and certificates. These should be copies of the originals on letter-headed paper or with a stamp from the awarding body/institution. Please provide references on letter-headed paper and a copy of your CV if relevant to your application. If you're applying for an art and design course, please include a copy of your portfolio. If you're an international student, you'll also need to include English language qualifications and a photocopy of the photograph and personal details pages of your passport.

Objective:

The MSc/MA Professional Practice Maritime is a flexible postgraduate course, especially designed for seafarers and shore based maritime professionals who are looking to use their existing industry qualifications (such as the Class 1 Certificate of Competence) towards a Masters degree.

To join this masters programmed you should normally have held a Class 1 Certificate of Competency for three years or hold an equivalent qualification in a related subject, and be working in the maritime sector. If you have been working in a management role within the maritime sector for five or more years but don't hold a Class 1 Certificate of Competency it may be possible to join the programmed by taking an additional Review of Learning module.

Qualifications
Applicants should normally have held a Class 1 Certificate of Competency for three years or hold an equivalent qualification in a related subject, and be working in the maritime sector.

Eligibility UK/EU and international students are eligible to apply for this course.

Academic credit for previous study or experience. If you have relevant qualifications or work experience, academic credit may be awarded towards your Middlesex University programme of study. For further information please visit our Accreditation of Prior Learning page.

English language requirements for international students. You must have competence in English language to study with us. The most commonly accepted evidence of English language ability is IELTS 6.5 (with minimum 6.0 in all components). We also normally require Grade C GCSE or an equivalent qualification. If you don't meet our minimum English language requirements, we offer an intensive Pre-sessional English course.

Interviews, entrance tests, portfolios and auditions. Entry onto this course does not require an interview, portfolio or audition.
