Since its foundation in 1996, the Department of Architecture and Ocean Space of Korea Maritime & Ocean University has been the only architectural department in Korea operating a program focused on utilizing maritime open space. Through research and specialized courses, the department produces professionals well versed in traditional architecture and the special needs of the maritime sector. The department has also promoted Internationalization by holding the International Oceanic Architecture Symposium in collaboration with the Department of Oceanic Architecture and Engineering of Nihon University since 1999.

Architecture is an activity to design and construct the attractive houses and buildings where man lives in comfort and safety. The Department of Architecture & Ocean Space provides the unique educational program in architecture related to ocean space in the country. This major offers students the opportunity for studying the basic architectural design as well as water front design, interior design of cruise ship covering both general and oceanic architecture. Also students learn the principles of architectural structure, facilities, and environment including the details of construction and building management. This major trains students to solve architectural problems in the marine environment and aims to produce architectural engineers who are creative, problem-oriented, and socially responsible.
