Who is it for?

The course is designed for people who wish to make a career in the marine and offshore industries and who have either developed some experience in industry, maritime or otherwise, or have a sound academic basis or skills upon which to build.

During the course, in addition to gaining an understanding of the underlying principles upon which the industry is based, students will also gain confidence in the interpersonal and international cultural skills which are essential to senior roles in the maritime industries.

Objectives

The Maritime Operations and Management course is designed for existing professionals serving in the industry as well as those looking for a career within the maritime, offshore and sea transport industries. For those already within the industry applicants are likely to have a responsible sea-going or middle-management position. Alternatively, new entrants to the industry are likely to have attained a first degree in a related technical or management subject.

This modular course is focused towards giving students the necessary knowledge and skills to help them achieve high levels in their careers in the maritime and offshore industries. Indeed, many former students on this course have now reached board level appointments in their various companies.

In order for your application to be considered, please ensure that you upload the following documentation with your application:

For all applicants, please upload your degree certificate and transcript of marks from your first degree (if you do not have your final results at the time of making your application, please upload a provisional certificate/interim transcript of marks). A transcript is required in order to have your application processed.
If your first language is not English, or you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, please upload a Proof of English Proficiency if you have already obtained it. A list of accepted qualifications can be found here.
If you require a Tier 4 student visa to undertake a Master's programme in the UK, please upload a detailed personal statement outlining why you wish to study this specific course, at City, University of London, as well as explaining how your past studies have prepared you for this course and how it will help you to progress in your career.

Learning outcomes

Students will gain a good understanding of maritime operations, management, marine law, accountancy and technology and the related business environment in which they work. The course will also provide technical knowledge of selected aspects of ship design and operation and/or related maritime land-based or offshore structures, sub-sea engineering/mining, environment, marketing, security, risk management and port operations. Students will develop skills to equip them for taking leadership and management responsibility in a wide range of maritime activities.

Prerequisites

For those already working in the industry, we require a first degree, recognised professional qualification or the equivalent Certificate of Competence as Master or Chief Engineer: Class 1 Master Mariner or Class 1 Engineer and experience in one of these roles.

For those coming straight from an undergraduate course, we require a lower second class honours degree (or higher) in a relevant subject from a recognised institution.

Other suitable qualifications

If you do not qualify for direct entry, you may wish to follow a Graduate Diploma pathway to the programme through one of our partners.
