Institute of Marine Sciences (IMS) offers graduate (MSc. and PhD) degrees in the following fields: Marine Biology and Fisheries, Oceanography and Marine Geology and Geophysics. These graduate programs invite students with the backgrounds in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, statistics, or in any related engineering department.
Reseaches are carried out to determine the characteristics of the sea floor and metres below the sea floor (‘mbsf’). Morphological structure, nature, thickness and geochemical structure and distribution of the rocks and sediments forming the seafloor and ‘mbsf’ are determined by various methods and tools. At METU-IMS deep-sea research have been carried out in four interconnected programs; i) deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems, ii) seafloor characterization and habitat mapping, iii) marine chemical sensors iv) sediment geochemistry and geomicrobiology.
