Aquaculture has been one of the fastest growing activities in the world during the recent years. It plays a very important economic and social role, through the production of food and the generation of jobs, income, and the promotion of social equivalence. Extractive fishing, in contrast, perhaps has reached its maximum sustainable limit, making food production from aquaculture increasingly significant. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecasts as one of the main global trends for the coming years an even more significant growth in Aquaculture, both in terms of the dissemination and consolidation of this activity, as well as the diversification of cultivated species. Brazil has an extensive coastline and a large volume of inland waters, which gives it enormous potential for the adequate development of aquaculture activity. In particular, this activity assumes unparalleled importance on the south-southeast coast as an alternative source of financial and job creation of great potential, given the particularly favorable conditions in the region. Such development potential fully justifies the priority that is directed to Aquaculture, in terms of training professionals. The Aquaculture Engineer will use conceptual, methodological, technical and scientific tools from the Aquaculture area to design, plan and evaluate methodologies and techniques applicable to the cultivation of aquatic organisms, aiming at the efficient production of food and derivatives of aquatic origin, at the service of regional development integrated.
