The degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) is offered in Marine Biology by full-time and part-time study through the Department of Ocean Sciences. Areas of concentration include: Biological Oceanography, Marine Ecology and Evolution, Functional Biology of Marine Organisms, Fisheries and Aquaculture, and Marine Biogeochemistry.
With over 60 graduate students, the Department of Ocean Sciences has 14 full-time, 1 Emeritus, 1 Honorary, and 2 cross-appointed faculty members. Approximately 12 researchers from outside the university, many employed in government laboratories (agriculture, fisheries, forestry, wildlife), hold adjunct appointments with the Department and contribute to the graduate program as co-supervisors and supervisory committee members. A strategic goal of the Department is to provide high-quality educational and training opportunities, particularly at the graduate level. Our graduate students are engaged in a variety of research areas including physiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology; biological and chemical oceanography; behavioural and population ecology; and aquaculture and fisheries.
Application procedure
First, an Ocean Sciences faculty member must agree to supervise the student. Applicants for graduate school therefore must have corresponded and made prior arrangements with one or more faculty members who are willing to (a) be the applicant’s graduate supervisor and (b) provide research and personal support.
Second, adequate funds must be available for both personal and research support. The minimal level of personal support is set by the Ocean Sciences Graduate Studies Committee.
The graduate application will include the following items:
Online application
Official transcript(s) (must be submitted by post mail or courier)
Two (2) letters of appraisal
Non-refundable application fee
Proof of English proficiency
Additional requirements (may be required)
All applications must be submitted online (credit card required). Current or former Memorial University students are encouraged to apply through Memorial Self-Service.
Submit letters of appraisal, additional forms, and writing samples by email to gradapply@mun.ca.
Submit transcripts, confirmation of degree completion, and test scores by post mail or courier to:

Grant opportunities
Funding: $18,500
Funding sources include:
School of Graduate Studies fellowships – ranging from $4,000 to $12,000 per year
Graduate assistantships (employment) – ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 in accordance with the TAUMUN collective agreement
Supervisor grants/contracts – ranging from $3,000 to $15,000 per year
Special initiatives funding – ranging from $5,000 to $8,000 per year
Learning outcomes
From the community to the organismal level, our graduate students study ecological, physiological and behavioural responses to highly variable or extreme physical, biological and chemical environments. Students gain greater specialization in their field of interest while performing cutting-edge thesis research.
Prerequisites
A biology B.Sc. (Honours) degree (or equivalent) with at least high second-class standing.
All students are encouraged to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test and/or the one for Biology Students.
