The Doctoral Program in Oceanography trains specialists in the integrated study of the ocean with a solid background in the four fundamental areas of oceanography: biological, physical, chemical and geological, with specialization in one of these basic areas through the thesis . This training aims to provide the student with the necessary tools to develop independent research and participate in the training of undergraduate and graduate students in academic settings. Scientific training will also allow them to lead technical assistance projects that involve the integrated study of the marine environment. The Program is focused on the training of doctors in all areas of oceanography. Biological oceanography is the most developed and includes research lines in pelagic and benthic ecology, fishing oceanography, population biology, marine organisms genetics, and aquaculture. Research areas in physical oceanography are, among others, internal waves, remote sensors, marine instrumentation and fluid mechanics. In chemical oceanography, the main research areas are marine organic geochemistry, biogeochemical cycles in the water and sediment column, radiochemistry, natural products chemistry, organic matter flows to the water-sediment interface. Geological oceanography research is oriented towards sediment transport and paleoceanography.
Learning outcomes
The graduate of the Program will have the competences to apply concepts and methodologies relevant to oceanography, analyze and solve scientific problems associated with the area of specialization, formulate research projects and integrate into multidisciplinary work teams, and communicate scientific knowledge in their area of specialization in academic and non-academic contexts. Graduates of the Doctorate in Oceanography will be prepared to:
- Integrate scientific concepts and methodologies for the generation of new knowledge in Oceanography.
- Organize and communicate scientific information about the discipline in academic and non-academic contexts.
- Formulate autonomously research projects in oceanography.
- Develop oceanographic research autonomously or by integrating multidisciplinary work teams.
- Critically evaluate information relevant to the discipline.
Prerequisites
- Have a Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology or related careers, or a Master's degree in disciplines related to natural sciences (i.e. Sciences with a mention in Fisheries, Economics of Natural Resources and Environment, Exact or engineering sciences).
- A verifiable academic trajectory: pre- and post-graduate assistantships, participation in publications and congresses as co-author and as principal author, short-term academic stays abroad, participation in seasonal courses or any other verifiable relevant academic activity.
- Present two letters of recommendation from researchers of recognized trajectory, one of which must be from a teacher of the House of Studies (Alma Mater) where the applicant was trained.
- Undergo a face-to-face personal interview for Chilean applicants from the VIII Region and adjacent Regions, and by video conference for foreign and Chilean applicants from other Regions.
- In the application, the line of research to be carried out must be indicated according to the lines of research of the Program.
- Instrumental English evaluable in the admission interview, or by means of an English level certificate from an accredited institution.
