When you study Sustainable Energy Engineering, you can choose the specialisation in Offshore Energy Systems.

In this study programme, you learn about design, analysis and modelling of offshore energy systems and the system component interaction. You get to work with fluid and water wave mechanics, offshore energy system including electrical and mechanical systems, together with control, optimisation and diagnosis of offshore energy systems.

Teaching takes place in an innovative and dynamic environment. You will experience courses, problem based project work and a high degree of interaction with industrial partners and energy supply companies. Companies play an active part in the project work, and they provide guest lecturers and arrange company visits for students. All of this provides you with an excellent opportunity to build a network in the industrial world before graduation.

When you apply for a Master's programme at Aalborg University, you have to use the Application Portal which is a national Danish digital application system in which the entire application process is handled.

Please note that some of the programmes offered may be subject to restricted admission. That means that the individual programmes may have a limited number of student places. Information on the programmes affected and the exact number of places offered will be available shortly when finally clarified.


Learning outcomes

The objectives of the Offshore Energy Systems MSc syllabus are:

  • General understanding of the design, modelling and optimisation of energy systems used in various offshore energy applications
  • Understanding the detailed operation, functionality and interaction between the various components of offshore energy systems
  • Detailed insight into system integration with respect to both system efficiency and control engineering aspects of offshore energy systems
  • Developing, constructing and operating offshore energy systems in the laboratory and in real applications
  • Insight into the topics related to the practical realisation and implementation of offshore energy systems concerning both innovative aspects, business planning and economical considerations

Applicants without legal claim to admission are: 

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Energy Engineering with the specialisation in Mechatronics, Aalborg University, campus Aalborg
  • Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Sustainable Energy Engineering with the specialisation in Mechatronics, Aalborg University, campus Aalborg
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Applied Industrial Electronics, Aalborg University, campus Esbjerg
  • Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Mechatronics with relevant elective courses, University of Southern Denmark (SDU), campus Sønderborg
  • or similar

All applicants must document English language qualifications comparable to an English B level, as a minimum, in the Danish upper secondary school. Please note that B refers to the course level - not grade. See below for further details about requirements.


Applicants applying for Master's programmes at Aalborg University must submit results of an IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge test with the below mentioned minimum scores:

IELTS (academic test). 6.5 overall band score
TOEFL (internet-based): Minimum score: 85
Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency (CPE): 180 / level C1
Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): 180 / grade C
