Maritime Operations (M.Sc.)

Master (ISCED 2011 level 7)

Tijdsduur 4 semesters
Cost 311,67 € per semester

This program is a joint master study program between the Western Norway University of Applied Sciences and the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. Both Universities are well known for their maritime education and are closely connected to an active maritime Industry.

The first semester takes place in Haugesund (Norway) and the second semester in Leer (Germany). The two partner institutions provide each one profile that can be elected in the third semester. This then determines the location of study. The master thesis in the fourth semester should be within the frame of the chosen profile.

The study program sets out to cover maritime operations, with ship technology and management as supporting framework. Maritime operations will cover different aspects related to different maritime operations; the international aspect (such as regulations), the technical aspect (such as ship stability), the organizational aspect (such as the complex relationship between human and technical factors) and the managerial aspect (such as safety and risk) throughout the two compulsory semesters. In the maritime industry of today the technological, operational and managerial aspects are entwined and technology and management will both be present in some form in all maritime operations.

A holistic approach in regard to economy, environment and development increases the attractiveness of the graduates for the maritime labor market. For this reason the student may choose between several specialisations, offered by international partner universities. The specialisation refer to the core education areas the respective partners are known for.

The workload in a course is measured in credits. One year full-time is 60 credits. Most courses are 10 or 6 credits. In a full-time study, a minimum of 40 hours of productive work each week during the study is required. Some students may need to use more time.
