Duración 4 semesters
Nivel de entrada Bachelor
Costo SEK 290 000 non EU/Swiss, no tutition fees for EU/Swiss

Naval Architecture is a multidisciplinary subject with a strong emphasis on systems engineering and engineering design. The programme is characterised by a progressive learning environment with the student in focus, and has a reputation of educating creative and skillful engineers for the maritime sector as well as for other branches of engineering.

The programme consists of a core track of studies and three optional tracks. In the core, you develop your general knowledge and skills in ship design, systems engineering, and a theoretical foundation in ship hydrostatics and stability, resistance and propulsion, waves, seakeeping, maneuvering, and ship structures. By choosing one of the tracks, you have the opportunity to develop deeper understanding and skills in Lightweight StructuresFluid Dynamics, and Management.

There is also room for elective courses, where you have the option of either broadening your education, or specialise further in your chosen track, or study underwater technology and high-speed craft, or other areas suitable for your interests and career goals. The programme is finalised with an individual study in the form of a degree project.

Proceso de aplicación

The application form is web-based, via  the national government agency "Swedish Council for Higher Education" and their website Non EU/EEA/Swiss students will be required to pay a one-time SEK 900 (Swedish kronor) application fee. Complete your application by uploading the required documents at University Admissions or sending them by post:

  1. Cover sheet (generated from the web-based application). This applies only to applicants without a Swedish personal ID number.
  2. Certified copies of certificates and diplomas from previous education at an internationally recognised university.
  3. Certified copies of transcripts of records (including course list).
  4. Proof of English proficiency.
  5. A copy of your passport or some other document of identification.
  6. Proof that you meet the specific requirements of the programme(s) chosen
  7. KTH Check-list
  8. Letter of motivation
  9. Letter of recommendation

Resultados del aprendizaje

When graduating from this program you will possess knowledge and experience of the complete processes of conception, design, modeling, implementation and operation of boats, ships, marine installations and other complex systems, along with deep theoretical knowledge in related topics such as lightweight structures, fluid mechanics and management.

Career. The multi-disciplinary character of naval architecture, and the structure and curriculum of the programme, make the education relevant for careers in the maritime sector as well as in other fields. Within the maritime sector, Swedish companies are leaders in a number of areas, such as ship design, ship operation, propulsion systems and design and construction of high-technology ships, submarines and small craft. Naval architects are also employed by state authorities such as the Swedish Transport Agency and the Swedish Defence Material Administration. Significant international employment markets can also be found in the other Nordic countries, in other parts of the EU and in the large shipbuilding nations in Asia. Outside the maritime sector you for example find naval architects in the automotive industry or as technical consultants.

A Bachelor of Science degree (BSc) in naval architecture, vehicle engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering physics or similar is required. A Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng) in similar areas might be considered on an individual basis. The applicant's qualifications must include a strong working knowledge of mathematics and mechanics:

  • Mathematics: 25 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus, differential equations and numerical methods.
  • Structure mechanics and materials: 12 ECTS

In addition, sufficient qualifications within elementary programming using e.g. MATLAB or a similar programming language are required. The grade point average must be at least 75 % of the scale maximum.
