The study complies with the most recent requirements of education of the managing personnel on board merchant vessels. Besides the compliance of the study programme with STCW Convention, the Faculty is provided with the most up-to-date equipment necessary for acquiring knowledge and skills required.
The basic objectives and purpose of the study programme of Nautical engineering are:

  • regular education for highest officer ranks (1st deck officer and master on board ships with propulsion power of more than 3000 GT) for Croatian shipping companies and international market,
  • development of culture of safety at sea and marine environmental protection in the system of continuous education and training of seafarers,
  • scientific approach to restructuring of Croatian maritime economy,
  • continuation of quality improvement in higher education of maritime experts according to international and EU standards in compliance with the Bologna declaration and life-long education (continuous training).

Having completed this study the students acquire competences of managing, controlling and maintaining ship’s and navigational systems as well as competences for ranks and authorisations in the Croatian and world merchant fleet.

After the students have attended courses and passed relative exams of the undergraduate study, i.e. after they have settled all their obligations laid down by the approved study programme, The Faculty will issue them Certificates. The Certificate is issued with the purpose of acquiring certificates of competence and additional competences under the provisions of The Regulation on Requirements for the Award of Ranks and Certification of Seafarers on Board Merchant Ships of the Republic of Croatia. Furthermore, students are issued appropriate Certificates on Completed Training Programmes, which along with a certain practice on board allows acquiring the highest rank in shipping – master on board ship with propulsion power of more than 3000 GT.

With the undergraduate study programme of Nautical engineering a special account has been taken of its compliance with the study programmes of other international maritime universities as well as with the respective study at the Faculty of Maritime Studies in Rijeka and Maritime Department of the University of Dubrovnik, which has enabled mobility of students and teachers.
