About the discipline: The program was established in foresight of the economic and environmental importance of the sea’s economic, technological, and scientific potential, and the vital need to educate a generation of researchers and experts in marine sciences.

Advantages of the degree: The BSc program in marine sciences and marine environment at the Ruppin Academic Center is the only academic program in Israel in this discipline that is accredited by the Israeli Council for Higher Education and recognized by all Israeli universities and research institutes. The program has subsidized (university-level) tuition.

The curriculum includes a wealth of lab time, field trips, and research projects. It also includes seamanship studies, during which students sail along the Israeli coast, to Cyprus, and to Greece. Students have the option of taking skippering and diving courses at clubs near campus.

The faculty has a special, pleasant atmosphere that is conducive to learning and hosts a wealth of social and

community activities.

Goals of the program:

  • Provide students with wide-ranging, applied academic knowledge of marine sciences.

  • Prepare alumni to embark upon successful careers in research, marine agriculture, industry, and related fields.

  • Enable students to develop the knowledge base and learning skills required to pursue advanced degrees in life sciences in general and in marine sciences in particular.

  • Distinctive courses: The curriculum includes unique courses such as the ecological system of the Mediterranean Sea, marine botany, marine microbiology, physical, chamical and biological oceanography, and a supervised research project. For the complete course list, please see the table on the curriculum page.

  • faculty’s infrastructure: Chemistry, biology, molecular biology, and genetics labs, as well as running seawater labs to study the Mediterranean Sea (the only labs of their kind in Israel), and a natural marine products lab. A research vessel, a sailing club, and a diving club are all at students’ disposal.
