Formato del curso On-site
Fecha 2021-01-04 - 2021-06-18

Objectives and Content

The course gives a practical introduction to the application of marine geological and marine geophysical instrumentation and field methods (seismic, multibeam and sediment sampling) for acquisition and analyses/interpretation of seismic profiles, bathymetric data and sediment cores. There will be a theoretical introduction on the methods applied in the field and in the laboratories. The students must carry out an interpretation on the acquired/retrieved acoustic data set and in addition describe and analyse the sediment core material and present and discuss the results in a report.

Prerrequisitos

Principles of marine geology and geophysics.

Resultados del aprendizaje

On completion of the course the student should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

The student

  • can explain principle terms, definitions and theories
  • can classify and exemplify the most important marine erosion and deposition forms that occur in glacial-interglacial environments
  • can explain the main features of the geological development history (marine and terrestrial) during late-glacial and Holocene time in the study area
  • can describe and explain the methods used to reconstruct the erosions- and deposition history of marine fjord and shelf basins and how it can be traced/correlated in geological archives

Skills

The student

  • demonstrate and practice skills in data collection both during field work and in the sediment laboratory
  • can compile, interpret and summarize different geological archives and observations/data/principles with graphs and figures with geosystem data (e.g. seismic profiles, core data, time series)
  • can perform interpretation and field and laboratory investigations on collected field data and compile these data archives
  • can do simple searches for relevant Earth Science literature and data, as well as cite sources correctly
  • can compare and discuss different geological processes that have implications for the use of dating methods and interpretation of dating results

General competence

The student

  • can use a precise geological language for describing and discussing marine geological processes and events
  • can plan and implement marine geological surveys and apply geological and geophysical methods and integrate, analyse, interpret and critically discuss the results and present the results in a written report
  • can present the data collection, methods, results and geological interpretation in a report describing both the stratigraphy and the geological processes in the study area
  • demonstrate the ability to function individually, in collaboration and ethically with others
  • can use library and scientific databases to retrieve relevant information
  • can accomplish laboratory and field work/cruise in alignment with GEO's/UiB's health and safety regulations
