Nordic Master in Maritime Engineering

The Master program in Maritime Engineering is concentrated on ships, including small craft, yachts and offshore structures, their design, construction and operation and their interaction with the environment. 

You learn to apply rational methods within mathematics, numeric analyses, fluid mechanics and structural mechanics to analyze, design and technically operate ships and offshore structures. Moreover, you will understand the special, high demands to these structures for instance with respect to safety and consideration for the environment.

How to apply

When you decide to apply, you must decide on study track and start university, which you must clearly indicate in your application. You may apply to more than one combination of study track and starting university, and in which case you must clearly state your priority. You must also write a statement of motivation for your studies (see below). You give the letter of motivation through the Application Summary and Motivation Statement form. The statement of motivation should be the same even if you have more than one priority. 

The administration of the applications is done by DTU, no matter which study track you wish to do or at which university you want to start. This is why you are directed to the DTU homepage “Application form for joint programmes”. There, find the box “Nordic Master Programmes - Nordic Five Tech” and find “Maritime Engineering” and the combination of study track and starting university. Follow the procedure. The Application Summary and Motivation Statement form as well as other relevant documents must be uploaded as pdf documents.

Statement of Motivation

In the statement of motivation you should very briefly explain your background and your motivation for studying maritime engineering, including the study track you have selected. You must clearly indicate the study track that you wish to do. If you send more than one application you should use the same statement of motivation, and in this case give priority to the combinations of study track and start university that you wish to do. You do this by filling in the Application Summary and Motivation Statement form.

Career Prospects

A NMME graduate will typically be employed as a naval architect or offshore engineer by consultancies, design offices, ship owners, maritime administrations, offshore companies, classification societies or suppliers of special equipment. The roles in the enterprise may be those of chief executive, development manager, team manager, consultant, specialist, or researcher. 


Admission requirements 
In order to apply for the Nordic Master programme in Maritime Engineering (NMME), you have to fulfill a number of requirements.

Degree Requirements:
Applicants must hold a BSc or BEng corresponding to a minimum of 180 ECTS credits. At Aalto and Chalmers it is possible to start with no prerequisites within naval architecture.

Applicants must hold one of the following degrees:

  • A BSc degree in Naval Architecture for start at Aalto, Chalmers, DTU and NTNU,
  • A BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering for start at Aalto and Chalmers,
  • A BEng in Mechanical Engineering for start Aalto and Chalmers.
  • Applicants with a BEng in Naval Architecture, or a BSc or BEng in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, in Ocean Engineering, in Civil Engineering or in Engineering Physics will be considered on an individual basis.

The degree must not be more than 10 years old,. Applicants with an older degree may be considered under special circumstances.

The applicant’s qualifications must include a strong working knowledge of mathematics and mechanics and applicants must document that they have fulfilled the following minimum requirements (a qualification checklist for this documentation must be attached to your application; it is part of the Application Summary and Motivation Statement form and can be found here):

  • Mathematics: 25 ECTS including linear algebra, calculus and differential equations.
  • Statistics and probability theory: 5 ECTS. Students without this qualification must be prepared to complete their curriculum during the first year.
  • Statics, mechanical vibrations, and strength of materials: 10-15 ECTS
  • Fluid mechanics: min. 5 ECTS
  • Sufficient qualifications within numerical methods and elementary programming using e.g. MATLAB or a similar programming language.

Applicants with a Polytechnic (FI), Högskoleingeniör (SE) and Diplomingeniør (DK) degree may be expected to do extra course work to qualify for the programme.

English language requirements:
When applying for admission, you must provide evidence of your academic achievements and proficiency in English. Certified photocopies of relevant documents must be enclosed with the application. The English language requirements can be fulfilled by: 

  • TOEFL:
    Paper-based: 580 (written section grade 4,5)
    Internet-based test: 92 (written section grade 22) 

  • IELTS:   6.5, no section lower than 5.5 (only IELTS Academic Training accepted)

  • C1 Advanced / Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) 

The language test must not be older than two years


English language test exemptions:

  1. Applicants who have citizenship or have completed a university degree instructed in English at a university that is physically located in one of the following countries:
    - Australia
    - Canada (except Quebec)
    - Ireland  
    - New Zealand
    - United Kingdom
    - USA
  2. Applicants who have completed at least a 3-year degree instructed in English in an EU/EEA country.

For Nordic citizens only: documentation from upper seconday school/high school that the English level is comparable with the English B - level in Denmark (see Skema til omregning af fagniveauer for nordiske eksaminer, see here), and include the school leaving certificate of your upper secondary education in your application package).
