Quantification of ecosystem services delivered by seagrass meadows in the Ria Formosa lagoon.

Internship position (6 ECTS)
Seagrass meadows provide important ecosystem services such as nutrient removal, carbon sequestration, nursery habitat, improvement of water quality, and buffering role against ocean acidification. The student will participate in fieldwork/labwork activities in the framework of a project aiming to evaluate these ecosystem services in the Ria Formosa lagoon. The student will gain experience in general methods of sampling seawater and sediment in coastal vegetated areas, the measurement of seawater physico-chemical properties, determination of seagrass abundance, and analytical methods in the laboratory (e.g. determination of alkalinity and dissolved oxygen).
