General information

The course is aimed to study some fundamental notions and tools which are useful to forecast the drift and weathering of oil spills on the sea surface, as well as the projection of economic costs and ecologic risks derived from a tanker accident.

Programme information: 

1. Tankers traffic in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean. Types of transported oil, and projections for the future.
2. Main kinds of tanker accidents. Historical perspective. Economic and ecologic impact. Parameters affecting the impact. Models of economic impact based on historical evidence.
3. Dispersion of oil slicks and its modelling. Ocean circulation models. Lagrangian models.
4. Weathering of oil slicks and its modelling. Operational Oceanography models.
5. Short term forecast of oil spills. The MEDESS-4MS system.
6. Statistical methods to evaluate coastal impact. Long-term beaching frequency from climatological data and models.
7. Economic and ecologic risks and their quantification.

Cost:

Full price of this course is 340€. A reduced registration fee of 285€ is applied for early registrations (20 days before the opening of the course).


Prerequisites:

Students should have some elementary background on elementary mathematics (statistics, function analysis). Some background on scientific programming is welcome but not indispensable.

Regulations:

Students attending to at least 80% of the classes will receive a certificate confirming their participation in the course, signed by the Barcelona Ocean responsible person and by the Lecturers of the course.
