Offshore and Ocean Technology with Offshore Materials Engineering MSc/PgDip/PgCert

General information

The Offshore and Ocean Technology with Offshore Materials Engineering MSc course develops professional engineers with specialist knowledge of the selection, behaviour and maintenance of a wide variety of complex materials used offshore. This knowledge is crucial to the success of the industry, particularly with the growth in novel materials for the renewable energy sector. Our graduates can expect to be in demand globally as specialist structural and materials engineers, in oil and gas, and renewable energy applications.

This programme is suitable for engineering and science graduates keen to pursue careers within the offshore sector; or graduates currently working in the offshore and ocean-related industries keen to extend their qualifications; or individuals with other qualifications who possess considerable relevant experience. 

Programme Structure
The course comprises eight one-week assessed modules, a group project, and an individual thesis project. Students undertaking the Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) complete the eight modules and the group project. Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) students are required to complete six of the eight modules. Part-time studies start throughout the year.

The group project is an applied multidisciplinary, team-based activity. It provides students with the opportunity to take responsibility for a consultancy-type project while working under academic supervision. Students select the individual project in consultation with the Course Director. The individual project provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to carry out independent research, think and work in an original way, contribute to knowledge, and overcome genuine problems in the offshore industry.

Part-time study fees: the annual registration fee is quoted above. An additional fee of £1.300 per module is also payable.


Prerequisites:

Degree Requirements
A first or second class UK Honours degree (or equivalent) in a related science or engineering discipline. Other recognised professional qualifications or several years relevant industrial experience may be accepted as equivalent; subject to approval by the Course Director. Applicants who do not fulfil the standard entry requirements can apply for the Pre-Masters programme, successful completion of which will qualify them for entry to this course for a second year of study.

English language
If you are an international student you will need to provide evidence that you have achieved a satisfactory test result in an English qualification. The minimum standard expected from a number of accepted courses are as follows:

  • Cambridge English Scale: 180
  • Cambridge English: Advanced - C ​| Proficiency - C

Application deadline: although there are no set application deadlines, applicants are recommend to apply as early as possible to secure a place. This is particularly important if you also want to apply for on-campus accommodation or need to apply for a visa to study in the UK, as these activities will take additional time after your course offer has been made.

Regulations:

The MSc course is accredited by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) for CEng, CMarTech and MIMarEST. In addition, the MSc has been approved by the Energy Institute (EI) for membership, and as meeting the Engineering Council UK’s further learning requirements for Chartered Engineer registration under UK-SPEC.
