New methods to assess the status of data-poor fisheries and its application to artisanal fisheries in Chile

Recent reports show that more than 80% of global catch comes from un-assessed fisheries. The major constraint to assess the status of exploited stock is access to information. This pattern applies to Chile, where several assessed fisheries are overexploited but we lack information to manage un-assessed fisheries, most of them small-scale artisanal fisheries. We propose to use a recently developed method, which uses only life-history, catch and fishery development data, to test its potential to estimate the status of artisanal fisheries in Chile.
