MSc ISATEC International Studies in Aquatic Tropical Ecology

General information

The international M.Sc. study programme ISATEC started in 1999 as a cooperative enterprise between the University of Bremen and the Leibniz Center for Tropical Marine Ecology (ZMT). ISATEC prepares young professionals for research and practical work related to the management and conservation of tropical aquatic ecosystems and their resources.

The main objectives of the ISATEC programme are to provide:

  • The essentials for understanding the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems in the tropics.
  • Theoretical concepts and methods for resource assessment and evaluation.
  • Approaches for coastal planning and management.

The programme is completely taught in English. It is comprised of two years (four terms) and includes the submission of a written thesis. German language courses run parallel to the main programme and are available to all students.

The first two terms consist of thematic teaching modules, each of which is composed of weekly block courses. The more fundamental courses are offered primarily to ensure that students from different backgrounds receive the necessary training before proceeding with the more advanced courses. Field experimental and laboratory work is carried out during a two-week excursion in the first term.

During the third term, participants are required to study at one of the partner institutions of the ZMT/Bremen University. During this, students must carry out their fieldwork and data collection for their MSc thesis, which is carried out during the fourth term. Alternatively, participants may bring data/material for elaboration from their home institutions or may further investigate existing samples from ongoing projects of the ZMT and Bremen University. A detailed overview of the study programme is available here.

Practical information: Course times and language: The programme starts at the beginning of each winter term in October. Classes in the winter term begin in October and end in February, the summer term period lasts from April to July. In the winter term, the lecture period is interrupted by the Christmas vacation. The programme is completely taught in English. It is comprised of two years (four terms) and includes the submission of a written thesis. The third term is spent at a tropical partner institution of the ZMT/University of Bremen.

It is advisable for foreign students to have some basic knowledge of the German language. This makes the arrival to Germany and the adjustment to life outside the campus much easier. German language courses run parallel to the main programme and are available to all students.

Learning outcome:

Graduation. Since the start in 1999, more than 250 students from 54 countries of all continents have graduated in ISATEC. Many of those are now working in important labour positions in their home countries and several of them have stayed in close collaboration with the ZMT and the University of Bremen. Less than 4% of the beginners have not made it to graduation. An important proportion of the graduates (about 25-30%) have continued with Ph.D. studies either in Bremen or elsewhere.
