MSc Erasmus Mundus in Ecohydrology (ECOHYD)

General information

The Erasmus Mundus Master Course in Ecohydrology (ECOHYD) is constituted by European partners institutions such as: University of Algarve (Portugal), University of  Lodz (Poland), University of Kiel (Germany), UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education (Netherlands), and by the University of La Plata (Argentina) and also several Associated members.

Students have to study at least in three different universities (in this case also different countries) for at least 10-50 ECTS, in each, for the whole programme. A four HEI can be chosen for the thesis work. The ECOHYD programme totals 120 ECTS. The ECOHYD is organized in four thematic areas:

  • Understanding Function, Processes and Threats of Aquatic Ecosystems, Freshwater and Marine Systems (30 ECTS)
  • Toolbox for Applying Ecohydrology: Environmental Impact, Ecologic Modeling, Ecosystem Restoration, Sociology (30 ECTS)
  • Development of Personal Skills and Research Project Implementation (15 ECTS)
  • Specialization and Integration in Management and Engineering of Aquatic Ecosystems (15 ECTS Modules/Courses + 30 Thesis - 45 ECTS)

Mobility Scheme
For their first mobility (Semester 1 and 2) the students will start their first year either at the University of Algarve (Portugal) or at the University of Lodz (Poland). After acquiring 50 ECTS the students will be able to do their second mobility- the Summer School- to the National University of La Plata (Argentina). After Summer School the students will do a third mobility to the University of Kiel (Germany) or to UNESCO-IHE (The Netherlands). For their fourth mobility (4th semester) students will select one European Institution to do the Master thesis.

The ERASMUS MUNDUS Master Course in Ecohydrology (EMMC ECOHYD) will create highly specialized professionals in the area of Integrated Management of Aquatic Ecosystems and Resources (IMAER) based on the Ecohydrology approach and principles, able to generate applications, models and tests of the relationships between ecosystem functions and stressful factors impacting on aquatic ecosystems. Such professionals will have a profound understanding about the ecological and hydrological processes and their crucial and integrated role in ecosystems functioning, as a basis for designing and implementing long-lasting sustainable and restoration solutions for aquatic ecosystems.

Specific Objectives

  • Strengthen the exchange of experience between state members in the application of the Ecohydrology concept.
  • Establish common methodologies towards an integrated management of water in Europe and disseminate those ideas (by means of both lecturers and students) to the state members.
  • Strengthen the connection of Europe to third countries and consolidate the position of Europe as a leader in environmental and water issues.
  • Disseminate the European vision of environmental sustainability to third countries, demonstrated by the legislation framework adopted in water and coastal zone matters.
  • Disseminate European culture to third countries.
