Molecular characterization of microbial communities in marine sponges and green algae: structural and functional aspects

The main objectivesof this thesis are: - To isolate and identify bacteria from marine sponges using alternative culturing techniques; - To reveal the in vitro chemotactic, quorum-sensing and antimicrobial activities of these bacteria; - To define the metabolome of selected bacteria when confronted with host-derived environmental cues; - To determine the degree of host-specificity in bacterial metabolic response, by challenging sponge-derived bacteria with algal infochemicals and vice-versa
