Master Environmental Science and Engineering: Natural Water, Soil and Ecosystems Engineering

General information

Master Sciences et Ingénierie de l'Environnement spécialisation ingénierie des eaux, du sol et des écosystèmes

Education is provided in English and French BUT the Master can be done completely in English.

The SIE master is formed of universal engineers with their own specialty areas in studying, preventing, eliminating or reducing the harmful effects caused by various environments (water, air, soil). Environmental engineering of EPF is an essential part of the sustainable development. It participates in the development of processes and technological equipments and provides data to help the decision-makers in their choices, thus allowing the pursuit of the economic activity and the maintenance of life and environments.

SIE Master organization
The common curriculum includes the “Obligatory Sector” and the optional “Specific Sector of SIE”. It enables students to acquire excellent knowledge of environmental engineering in the following courses: Air pollution, Environmental transport phenomena, Geomonitoring, Spatial statistics and analysis, Water and wastewater treatment, and Water resources engineering. The implementation of this group of projects will prepare the students for better teamwork through often involving them in multiple players and issues. Program Brochure.

The program includes an 8-week compulsory internship. Students are requested to deepen their training either with a 30 ECTS Specialization in:

  • Environmental Chemistry and Bioprocess Engineering
  • Natural Water, Soil and Ecosystems Engineering
  • Environmental Monitoring and Modeling

Students can also opt for a 30 ECTS Minor. Minors recommended with this Master:

  • Energy
  • Biotechnology
  • Urban Planning and Territorial Development
  • Integrated Design, Architecture and Sustainability

The options (30 credits) allow the students to complete the specialization or minor chosen, or to follow courses offered in other specializations or minors. The Master Project (30 credits) needs to conduct in EPFL in another academic unit or in partnership with an industry in Switzerland or abroad.
