General information

Marine geophysics is the scientific discipline that is concerned with the application of geophysical methods to problems of marine geology. Exploration of the oceans using geophysical methods has had a profound effect on the way we view the structure of the Earth and has played a significant role in the search for natural resources and our understanding of marine sedimentary processes and offshore geohazards.

The aim of the course is to present the main geophysical techniques used to explore the seafloor and subsurface of the ocean floor: the theoretical principles, their applications and some practical exercises.

Programme information:

Theme 1. Principles and limitations of geophysical exploration at sea.
Theme 2. Positioning observations made at sea.
Theme 3. Seismic exploration at sea.
Theme 4. Underwater acoustics.
Theme 5. Offshore Mapping.
Theme 6. Marine seismic reflection profiling.
Theme 7. Well logging and borehole geophysics.
Theme 8. Earth’s magnetic field at sea.
Theme 9. Seabed investigation using electric and electromagnetic methods
Theme 10. Marine seismic refraction data.
Theme 11. The gravity field.

Practical lectures will be focused on seismic reflection data processing and interpretation. On demand, we may also devote a maximum of 1/3 of the practical lessons to processing multibeam bathymetric data.
