Marine Biology and Conservation

General information

Biologia Marinha e Conservação

The Masters in Marine Biology and Conservation has the duration of 4 semesters corresponding to 120 ECTS. ISPA offers its students opportunities for attending mobility and interchange programs, under a vast number of collaboration protocols with international universities, in particular in Europe, North America and Brasil. There is also a strong relationship with enterprises, businesses and institutes which receive students during the Internship. The completion of this study cycle offers the degree of Masters in Marine Biology and Conservation and allows students to apply for a PhD Course (3rd cycle).

For international students, all course materials are provided in English and, if enough students are attending the course, the classes will also be presented in English. ISPA offers to all students specialised tutorial meetings with faculty members in English.

ISPA’s UIEE R&D Unit, classified as Excellent by FCT supports this study cycle integrating some of its PhD members in the different curricular units. It will provide a specialized training in Marine Biology and Conservation of Marine Systems, integrating the main theories and methods of study and analysis with a practical approach to the problems of management given the students the possibility of choosing two profiles in the 2nd year:

i) an applied profile integrating their work in an internship in institutes, institutions and corporations with which ISPA establishes agreements (Thesis 18 ECTS; Internship 42 ECTS).
ii) a scientific and research profile (Thesis 42 ECTS; Internship 12 ECTS).

  2. Understand the basic biological phenomena which influence marine ecological processes and their implications to conservation strategies.
  3. Master the advanced statistical analysis of ecological data and the interpretation of the results obtained.
  4. Design, project, adapt and execute scientific research in Marine Biology and Conservation, respecting the ethical principles underlining the research process and the use of animals in research.
  5. Communicate in a clear and professional way the conclusion of the research as well as its theoretical and methodological assumptions to diverse audiences: scientists, decision makers, managers and the general public.
