Joint PhD Programme in Marine Sciences

General information

Programa Interuniversitario de Doctorado en Ciencias del Mar

The joint PhD Programme in Marine Sciences has cooperated actively since 1985 with top level Spanish research institutions and Universities. This cooperation has included teaching activities, tutoring research activities, PhD committees and similar. This cooperation has included Spanish Universities from the Atlantic and Mediterranean coast (Cantabria, Santiago, Cádiz, Valencia, La Coruña, Vigo, Almería, Alicante, Granada) and also from the Balearic Island and Canary Island (Universidad de la Laguna y Universidad de Las Palmas). Other centres that have participated are CEDEX and Instituto Español de Oceanografía; this has resulted in the organization in the I Encuentro de Oceanografía Física (Phisical Oceanography National Spanish Meeting), held in Barcelona last academic year and jointly organized by CSIC and UPC.

For the development of the programme we have also cooperated with various Universities and research organizations from the European Union, America, Asia and Australia. These cooperations have resulted in joint seminars to improve the research capacity of the students, PhD committees and, through the execution of joint research projects, in various types of research support activities for the participating students.

The European universities which have cooperated with the programme include Northern European institutions from the Netherlands (Utrech University and Delft University), Sweden (Lund University), Denmark (Aalborg-Copenhague Ghent Universities), Norway (Trondheim and Tromso Universities), United Kingdom (Southampton University) and Belgium (KULeuven University). We have also established cooperation links with universities from Southern Europe, from countries such as Italy (Universities of Salento, Ferrara, Bologna and Naples) and from Greece (Thessaloniki).

We have also established research links and active cooperation with American universities mainly from North America (Hawaii at Manoa University, Oregon University, Miami University, North Caroline University, Stony Brooks University, Massachussets Institute of Technology) and Canada (Queens University). We have also established cooperations with Southern America Universities such as for instance from Chile (Universidad Pontificia Católica) or Brasil (Universidad do Vale Do Itajai). In the same context we have established cooperation links with Australian Universities, mainly with Queensland University.

The joint PhD Programme in Marine Sciences has also explored and established cooperation links with Spanish and foreign top level research institutions in this field. These institutions include, additionally to the research centres from CSIC that already participate and promote the programme, centres such as Puertos del Estado (responsible for the main Marine observations networking Spain) and centres such as CEDEX, IEO, etc…, as mentioned above. We have also established an active cooperation with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center, responsible for advanced engineering developments and regulations in the USA.

In a similar manner, we have also established cooperation links with public and private research centres from the European Union (IFREMER in France, ISMAR in Italy, Hydraulic Research Wallingford in the United Kingdom) and from Japan (Port and Airport Researen Institue). This cooperation has also included advanced engineering and consultancy firms such as Alkyon Hydraulic Consultancy and Research, from the Netherlands.

All this has lead to an up-to-date research, in close contact with the needs from public and private centres working on Marine Sciences. This has allowed the student to get a training wider in scope than what would have resulted from only the promoting institutions and CSIC centres.

Spanish.

Objective:

The main aim of the Ph.D. Programme in Marine Sciences is to educate high level specialists in the different fields forming marine sciences/oceanography. The Ph.D. students "produced" by this programme will therefore be able to occupy high level positions in universities, research institutes and advanced technological companies. The offered specialization profiles will allow these students to face the ever increasing complexity of marine conflicts and problems.

Criteria for selection and for assessing student's merits. The main acceptance criterion is an education at the Spanish bachelor science level and master level that allow an efficient training such as the one proposed within the Marine Sciences PhD programme. More specifically the following items are considered:

  • Academic results and curriculum in the Master cycle of the student.
  • Academic marks and curriculum in the Bachelor cycle of the student.
  • Other declared merits such as stays at research centres related to Marine Sciences, publications or participation in related projects. With these criteria and based on individual merit and excellence, the PhD committee on Marine Sciences will propose yearly a list of accepted students.

The PhD programme committee will assess the background of all students and will require additional educational supplements when necessary.

Requisites for complementary methodological or scientific training courses (the official master's degree programme that these courses belong to must be specified). The academic profile for the interested students should cover the traditional disciplines in Marine Sciences. They should have a basic training in physical oceanography, chemical oceanography, marine biology, marine geology and, because of the special features of this PhD programme, offshore, coastal and harbour engineering and some aspects of the corresponding management. This type of desirable training is based on the PhD topics and tutorials offered by the two universities which support this PhD program (UPC and UB) with the contribution of the research centres from CSIC. All these centres provide training and research activities in all of these fields for the interested students coming from the Marine Sciences UB-UPC Master or from other related scientific or technological Master programs in these or other universities (Master in Civil Engineering at UPC and in the basic oceanographic sciences at UB). Because of these results the specific trajectory of every student will be assessed individually, looking for the basic training in the before mentioned fields, with emphasis on the “tools” basic required for a successful development of the future PhD thesis. The fluency and level of the English language will be also considered, since it is an important means to get access to present scientific developments in Marine Sciences. Finally, other supplementary courses related to the marine and coastal environment and declared by the student will also be considered, if they comply with the program requirements..

Application Procedure:

The interested parties can present a request of access to a doctoral programme from 1th  september 2016 until 30th April 2017. In an exceptional way the academic commitee of the doctoral programme will be able to consider requests of access until 30th June 2017.
