Course on Basic Safety

General information

Curso em Seguranca Basica

Basic Security courses and certificates are mandatory for working on board of ship and other vessels under the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).

The STCW Convention is an international convention:

  • It is a treaty of the conditions which seafarers must meet before they can carry out their duties on board commercial vessels;
  • It is a fundamental instrument for the safeguarding of human life at sea and the promotion and guarantee of living and working conditions on board;
  • It establishes the set of minimum requirements that seafarers must meet in terms of training and certification, extending their scope to suitability for service, in particular by establishing minimum hours of rest, always focusing on the dual safety, operational and occupational perspective ;
  • It covers all work carried out on board ships in a variety of functions, including special care for certain types of ships and particular attention to emergency, occupational safety, health and medical care, and survival functions.
Objective:

The Course on Basic Security has the following objectives:

  • Develop students' capabilities and create the conditions for them to acquire the necessary professional skills to carry out any labour on board of seagoing ships in conditions of personal and collective security;
  • To train the students with the professional skills necessary to access the safety certificate, basic under the legally established conditions;
  • Stimulate and contribute to individual improvement in order to consolidate, broaden and deepen the knowledge on theoretical and practical measures required to ensure safety on board vessels;
  • Contribute to the improvement of the conditions of individual and collective security in which the professional activity is carried out on board ships and vessels
