MSc in Maritime Management

General information

The program offers an opportunity for officers and shore-based personnel in the shipping cluster to enhance their knowledge in maritime management and acquire a degree of Master of Science at Chalmers University of Technology and take part of shaping the future shipping industry as leaders and researchers.

The ideal candidate is a maritime professional preferably with some years' experience within the shipping industry after received a BSc degree in major nautical, marine engineering, shipping and logistics or equivalent education and with a genuine passion for quality and sustainability.

The programme gives the students a theoretical and practical knowledge in Project Management, Quality, Risk and Safety Management with a well proven Chalmers standard at Master level. These courses are generic and are included in Chalmers Master’s programs in International Project Management, Supply Chain Management, Quality and Operations Management.

The programme also gives Master’s level standard’s skills within the areas Leadership and Communication, Marine Environmental Protection and Energy Management from courses developed by professional researchers at Chalmers Department of Shipping and Marine Technology. Finally the programme also puts emphasis on business acumen with courses as Business Development and Business Strategy Management.

Programme aim. There is a growing need for competent and educated leaders, both onboard ships and in onshore organisations. With the Master’s programme in Maritime Management both students without industry experience as well as officers and shore-based personnel will get the opportunity to further train themselves to get an important role as future leaders. Leaders who can guide the shipping industry into a new era faced with demands for effective logistics solution and strict quality demands. The students also get the possibility to participate in research education and research projects.

Prerequisites:

Degree Requirements
A Bachelor´s degree (or the equivalent) with a Major in Nautical Science, Marine Engineering or Shipping and Logistics or the equivalent. For applicants without a major in Nautical Science or Marine Engineering there is an additional prerequisite of studies in Maritime law or Maritime transport economics or the equivalent. Professional experience relevant to the Maritime industry.

English Language Proficiency
The most common and important scores that are accepted are:

  • IELTS (academic training), 6.5 (with no part of the test below 5.5)
  • TOEFL (Internet based): 90 (with a minimum of 20 on the written part)
  • TOEFL (paper based): 575 (with a minimum of 4.5 on the written part)

Application Procedure:

The application for Master’s programmes is open every year between Mid - October and Mid - January. 

Applications can only be submitted online via universityadmissions.se (in English) or antagning.se (in Swedish). Complete your online application by submitting the required documents seen below. Students who are citizens of a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland are required to pay an application fee of 900 SEK.

  1. Cover sheet - if you are to send your documentation by regular mail (this requirement does not apply to applicants with a Swedish personal identity number).
  2. Diplomas from previous university studies or Certificate of ongoing studies (if the Bachelor's degree has not yet been awarded).
  3. Transcripts of records (including grades) and course syllabus when necessary.
  4. Documentation of English language requirement.
  5. Proof that you meet the specific entry requirements.
  6. Relevant pages of your passport (or other valid ID) is necessary for the determination of fee status.
  7. Curriculum Vitae (CV).
