MSc Marine Geosciences

General information

The Marine Geosciences Master's program covers all relevant topics of marine geosciences dealing with geological, biological, geochemical and physical processes in the oceans. In addition to pure basic research, marine geosciences also pursue applied objectives. The exploration of resources such as hydrocarbons and hydrothermal deposits in the ocean is becoming increasingly important in securing raw materials. They also play a central role in the marine geosciences when it comes to researching geodynamic processes and securing the coasts. 
In addition, the ocean plays an important role in the Earth's climate system. The changes in the climate system in the past, present and future can be reconstructed using geoscientific methods. The findings on the dynamics of the ocean-climate system thus provide the basis for model calculations for the prediction of the global climate. 
The master's program focuses on coastal geology, marine geochemistry, paleoclimate research and marine resources. It builds on basic science and geoscientific knowledge, as it is taught in the Bachelor of Science Geosciences. In the master's program, the qualification for the independent handling of scientific questions is created, whereby the interaction of data acquisition, data processing and data interpretation, at sea and in the laboratory, as well as numerical simulation and model calculations and the use of geoinformation systems stand in the foreground. The graduates should gain a broad overview of current insights and research facilities in marine geosciences.

The Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel has defined the focus on maritime topics as one of its priorities. Research and teaching in the marine sciences are carried out in close collaboration with the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences and the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences at the CAU (IFM-GEOMAR). 

The master program Marine Geosciences offers a close integration of the subjects of meteorology and oceanography, which are particularly relevant for marine research. The degree program benefits from the strong maritime research orientation of IFM-GEOMAR. The link with the other marine science disciplines at the IFM-GEOMAR ensures interdisciplinary and technically sound training. 
The master's program is designed as an international degree course, as marine science research is predominantly international. All courses are offered in English. 

Objective:

The degree in the master program Marine Geosciences is intended to enable the graduates to take up employment in commercial enterprises and authorities in Germany and abroad. In academic research at research institutions, there is a worldwide demand for graduates who have received marine geoscientific training to understand the role of the ocean in the Earth system and its importance in global change. Due to the international orientation of the study program, the graduates are well positioned to compete successfully worldwide.

Prerequisites:
  • Bachelor Degree with GPA 2,5 or better with a minimum of 50 ECTS points collected on geoscientific subjects. Additional requirements will be obligatory if only 40 ECTS-points are provided by geoscientific subjects (set of courses with maximum 30 ECTS points) - for more details see "Fachprüfungsordnung" under Study Information)

    • University of Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English: Grade C or
    • Bachelor Degree in English: Certificate from the University proving that your study programm was taught entirely in English.
