Master of Science Geodesy and Geoinformatics: Hydrography

General information

Master of Science Geodesy and Geoinformatics: Hydrography

Within the 2-years Master program “Geomatik” (Geomatics) a specialization in Hydrography is possible - completely taught in English.

Safe navigation can only be achieved if National Hydrographic Offices and related administrative authorities employ hydrographers with a high level of competence both in hydrographic surveying and nautical charting. Up-to-date sensor technology and data processing methods have to be applied. An effective data management is essential. Modern methods of nautical charting also contribute directly to the protection of marine ecosystems through a reduction in ship groundings and maritime accidents. Furthermore, the hydrographic database provides important components for marine pollution detection, coastal zone management, as well as sensitive ecosystem identification and monitoring.

The hydrography program at HCU was examined by the International Advisory Board of the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), and accredited according to the “Standards of Competence of Hydrographic Surveyors” at Category A (highest level).

Modules of the hydrography specialization are as follows: Mathematics, Software & Interface Technology, GI Science, Basics of Hydrography, Hydrographic Data Acquisition and Processing, Marine Environment, Project Management, Terrestrial Laserscanning I, Integrated Navigation, Higher Geodesy, Geostatistics, Advanced Hydrography, GIS Hydrography, Navigation in Hydrography, Oceanography, Marine Geology/Geophysics, Hydrographic Practice, Master Thesis (5 months), Final Examination.

Objective:

Job Perspectives:

Positions in the public sector are typically available in national hydrographic offices and port authorities. Job opportunities in the private sector include: port and project surveys, surveys for marine exploration and mining, pipeline construction and investigation, offshore dredging, offshore constructions (e.g. windmill parks for offshore power generation), sensor and software technology, remote sensing, three-dimensional positioning and special navigation, geographical information systems (GIS) and electronic nautical charting, marine environment technology, marine geodesy and geophysics, such as seismic, magnetic, and gravimetric exploration.

Venue

Venue: HafenCity Universität
Hamburg, Germany

Application

Open from
1 Jun 2019 to 15 Jul 2019

Cost:

Please note that there is NO university fee in Hamburg anymore. Each semester students are required to pay a semester contribution (at present € 250 per semester). This includes the costs for the »semester ticket«, a ticket that permits free travel on Hamburg‘s public transport system.

Prerequisites:

You need a Bachelor’s degree in hydrography, geomatics, or a related field. A satisfactory score on the Bachelor’s examination is not required anymore. The non-German university degrees have to be approved by Uni-Assist. You can find information on requesting the preliminary documentation online at Uni-Assist. Please note: Foreign candidates have to apply via Uni-Assist AND the online form of the HafenCity University. You can apply with Uni-Assist earlier than June 1st (this is recommended!).

Foreign applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of their English language capability. For example, the following certificates are accepted: TOEFL-IBT (71), TOEFL-CBT (197), TOEFL-PBT (527), IELTS (5.0), TELC (B1), technical stay in Englisch speaking countries (min. 4 months), attendance of English speaking unversity course (20 CPs), or others (please ask us).

Application Procedure:

Application is possible between June 1st and July 15th (online only). The program starts every year in October.

Please note: For the winter semester 2017/2018, the new regulations for the study programs Bachelor and Master "Geodesy and Geoinformatics" will come into force. Prospective students for the study programs "Geomatics" can apply for these modernized study programs in the winter semester 2017/2018. In the master program "Geodesy and Geoinformatics" there are still the three specializations Geoinformation Technology, Geodetic Measurement Engineering and Hydrography.
