General information

The international marine biology schools aim to implement a lasting mechanism for focusing on marine biology, the “Daniel Jouvance- UPMC international marine biology schools,” in countries with an extensive coastline. The educational objectives of these schools are on the one hand to set up technical workshops in which to train students in basic techniques and on the other to teach new concepts and methods (such as, for example, genomic and post-genomic approaches) that can be used for the study of marine organisms and ecosystems, either for fundamental or applied research purposes.

This years Marine Biology summer school will be held at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, Heraklion, Crete, Greece. The summer school addresses PhD students and Post-doctoral researchers from the Adriatic, the Ionian Region as well as North Africa with interest in Marine Biology.

Summary Program

Module 1 - Issues in Aquaculture and Biotech: Marine bioresources and blue biotechnology, production of animal and algal species, multitrophic aquaculture.

Module 2 - Overview of methods: Basic concepts and approaches in genomics and post-genomics, breeding (macroalgae and fish), metabolic engineering in microalgae.

Module 3 - Case studies: Fish diseases, Sea Bass and Sea Bream, Shellfish, Seriola, microalgae, kelps, corals and symbioses.

Each student will be requested to give a 10 min presentation (+ 5 min discussion) about her/his current research. The school will incorporate intensive lectures (in English) focused on Genomics and Post-genomics, Marine bio-resources and blue biotechnology and aquaculture as well as a practical part allowing students to perform experiments in small groups as well as bioinformatics tutorials.
