Design optimization of a marine protected area network in Portugal

Type:
Master Thesis subject (30 ECTS)
programme:
EMBC+
The implementation of marine reserves in mainland Portugal is a recent and still ongoing process. In most cases, both the design and implementation phases lacked information about the habitat distribution, species distributions and human activities carried out. The thesis objective is to analyze different scenarios regarding the implementation of a network of marine reserves (including the ones already implemented). These scenarios will take in consideration the human use of coastal areas, (e.g. commercial and recreational fishing), information on habitat type and different conservation targets. Most data is readily available in web sites such as Emodnet but some effort will be needed to collect extra data from other databases, project reports and published papers. Marxan, a systematic conservation planning software, will be used as the main tool.
